Dandruff is super common but that doesn’t make it any less embarrassing and annoying to deal with and get rid of. There are many anti-dandruff products out on the market, but many include toxic ingredients like pyrithione zinc, which can cause eye irritations and skin problems along with hair loss, rashes and hives. These products often cause redness, itchiness and irritation which can cause a disruption of the endocrine, cardiovascular and reproductive system.

Not only are these all natural, but they are super affordable and you’ve probably got at least half of this list in your bathroom and kitchen cabinets already! Let’s get on with ti!
1) Tea Tree Oil
This is an essential oil which is created by steam distilling the leaves of a specific plant which is grown here in Australia. This tree oil is known for its effectiveness in reducing bacteria. This oil is helpful in battling fungus and bacteria which helps in tackling dandruff but doesn’t dry the scalp. This oil also helps in killing bacteria which is generally caused due to overproduction of the skin cells. This often leads to the formation of dandruff. As this tea tree oil is applied on scalp, it slowly seeps in the hair follicles; it slowly works to unclog them and removes all kinds of microorganisms which are known to cause an irritation. A study reveals that tea tree oil helps in reducing the severity of dandruff as much as by 5%.
You need 10 drops of the oil for 8 ounces of your shampoo. You can use it to wash your hair normally. Let it sit on the scalp for ten minutes, so that the benefits of the oil are soaked up.
You can also prepare one overnight effective medicine with the oil. You will need one small empty bottle, which is ¾ filled with almond oil. In this oil add at least 15 drops of organic tree oil and mix it well. You can apply the oil on your scalp and massage for 3-4 minutes. This will ensure that your scalp is well saturated. You can place a shower cap on your hair so that your pillowcase isn’t stained. You can wash the hair the next morning
2) Argan Oil:
This oil helps in reducing dryness and helps in nourishing the scalp and hair. The oil is packed with a number of essential oils and antioxidants. It helps in reducing dryness and skin inflammation. To prepare the pack, you need 5-6 drops of Argan oil. Rub the oil just between the palms. You can apply the oil to your scalp. Massage well. Use a shower cap and let the oil get soaked on your scalp and hair. You can use this oil twice a week. It is very effective in removing dryness and dandruff.
3) Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil is really effective in treating dandruff. It is used for treating dandruff naturally since ages. It helps in treating different scalp, skin and hair conditions which includes dandruff. It is best known for its anti-fungal properties. Coconut oil helps in killing fungus which leads to the formation of dandruff. Coconut oil is also a good moisturiser. It keeps the scalp hydrated and helps in treating dryness. Coconut oil also contains capric acid, lauric and caprylic which are a chain of medium fatty acids. This acid helps the oil to deeply penetrate in the scalp and hair. The oil has a nice soothing effect on the skin and reduces irritation and itchiness of the skin. It keeps the scalp and the hair healthy.
You need to warm at least two tablespoons of coconut oil in a small bowl or more if you have a long hair. The oil should be in liquid state completely. You can then apply this warm oil in your scalp. Massage the oil with your fingers. Apply the oil all over your hair. Start massaging the scalp and the roots. Apply the oil from the roots to the end. You need to massage the scalp for at least five minutes. Use a shower cap if needed. Leave the oil overnight. The next morning you can wash your hair like you do.
4) Apple Cider Vinegar:
Organic apple cider vinegar helps in treating dry and itchy skin. It also helps in cleaning dandruff which causes bacteria and fungus. Vinegar has an acidic content which helps in reducing the flakiness which is caused due to dandruff. The acidic nature of vinegar helps in balancing the pH level of the scalp. This makes it really difficult for the yeast on scalp to grow. To prepare this remedy, you need to mix equal quantities of water and apple cider vinegar. Keep the mixture aside. You need to first wash your hair using a normal shampoo. You can then apply this mixture on the wet hair. Massage the scalp and let the pack remain for 15 minutes.
5) Baking Soda:
Baking soda is very effective in treating dandruff. It is a great exfoliator. It helps in exfoliating the scalp and doesn’t irritate it. It is also very effective in reducing dead skin cells. This is an important process which doesn’t allow the flakes to gather on the scalp. It helps in absorbing excessive oil from the scalp. It removes dead skin cells and dirt from scalp. If there is excessive sebum in the scalp, it helps in reduce excess drying. Baking soda is alkaline in nature. It helps in balancing pH level of the skin and also reduces more problems.
You can use baking soda in many different ways for treating dandruff –
- Add a good quality baking soda in the shampoo.
- You can mix apple cider vinegar with baking soda. Prepare a paste and apply the paste on your scalp. You can massage gently and remove dandruff. You can again rinse your hair with cold water.
- You need to massage your scalp for at least 2 minutes. This will help in removing dead skin cells and will loosen the flakes. You can rinse the hair with normal water. You shouldn’t use a shampoo.
6) Raw Honey:
Raw honey has several benefits including its great ability to fight dandruff and other problems like seborrheic dermatitis. This is a natural humectant which helps hair to hold on the moisture. It helps in reducing hair dryness while infusing hair with different vitamins like beta-carotene, vitamin A, C, E, B-complex and D. It is also rich in different minerals like phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium.
As per a research in 2001, in the Journal of Medical Research it was observed that applying honey on your hair, by diluting it with 10% warm water helped in treating dandruff from affected areas. Honey usually got absorbed into the scalp and would offer relief from itchiness and scaling. Honey is a powerful ingredient with great anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Dandruff is the mainly caused due to the overgrowth of fungus
Many people realise that application of honey to hair can actually make it messy, but people do realise that honey application can actually make your hair dandruff-free and healthy. For this remedy, you need to first have your hair wet and apply diluted honey. You can mix 90% honey with 10% water. Massage this mixture for two minutes. Let it sit for at least three hours. You can then rinse your hair with cold water.
7) Lemon Juice:
Lemon juice is an effective treatment to remove dandruff naturally. It is acidic in nature which helps in balancing pH level of the scalp. This helps in removing dandruff away. You need to massage two tablespoons of lemon juice in the scalp. Let the juice remain for some minutes and you can then rinse off using cold water. You can prepare a solution with 8 ounces of water and a few drops of lemon juice. You should use this everyday and get rid of dandruff immediately.
8) Aloe Vera:
Aloe vera helps in cooling and soothing irritated scalp. It also helps in exfoliating and is known for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. This helps in removing fungus from the scalp which causes dandruff. Aloe Vera juice is also quite effective in cleaning the scalp. It helps in removing the debris which often gets accumulated in pores. This helps in balancing the pH of the skin. Aloe Vera is much cheaper than other dandruff clearing products available in the market, which contain Aloe Vera. Fresh juice or gel from the plant is really effective.
Aloe Vera is also known for it anti-fungal and antibacterial properties which help in getting to the root of problem. It is well known for its analgestic properties which help in stopping the itchiness. Dandruff can cause extreme discomfort and itchiness in the scalp. Apply aloe vera and massaging it lighting, helps in stimulating the sebaceous glands and helps in curing different infections from wounds.
You will need three snips of the plant for this method. You need to slice the leaves lengthwise with the help of a knife. Extract the gel which will ooze from the fresh leaves. You can use a spoon for extracting the juice. Store the juice in a container. You need to apply the gel on your scalp directly, Massage for a few minutes and let the gel penetrate deep in the scalp. You can cover your hair using a towel. Let the gel remain for thirty minutes at least and then you can wash your hair.
9) Olive Oil:
Olive oil is rich in a number of properties which help in improving the health of hair and scalp. It is rich in a number of vitamins like A and E. It is also rich in antioxidants which help in reducing the damage often caused by the use of a number of hair care products. Olive oil works as a natural moisturiser and helps in keeping the scalp hydrated. It ensures that the scalp doesn’t remain dry and flakes are reduced. It is rich in antibacterial and also anti-fungal properties which helps in taking care of a number of hair and dandruff problems. Olive oil is rich in polyphenols. This helps in keeping the scalp free from all debris, oil and dirt. It helps in soothing dry and frizzy hair, but without making hair greasy.
It is good to use the warm olive oil massage. This method is really effective in getting dandruff free and healthy scalp. All you need to do is warm one and a half cup of organic olive oil. You can warm it in the microwave or the stove. Use your fingers to test carefully that the oil isn’t too hot for application in the scalp. You can apply the oil to the scalp and massage gently. You can work through your hair and massage gently. You can also comb your hair and then cover it using a shower cap. You can let the oil set for at least 30 minutes or even overnight if you can. You can then wash off your hair as you can. Try this treatment at least once a week or till you find that the problem is solved.
