16 Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar Around the Home

Apple-Cider-VinegarApple cider vinegar has so many uses. Each one of us should ideally have a bottle of this at home. There are plenty of medicinal benefits of this vinegar. It can be used in many different ways and in several recipes. Do you know that apple cider vinegar can be used for cleaning your home too?

Just as the in case of other types of vinegar, ACV or apple cider vinegar is known for its antimicrobial properties. This vinegar is highly effective and sometimes much more than several other products which are available in the market. When we consider our own health, or the health of our planet, this is one natural product, which can be said to be the most effective in handling any kind of germ. You can mix ACV with other different cleaning ingredients which includes essential oils, salt and lemon juice.  However, you need to be careful and do not use it with baking soda, as it will neutralise the acidity of vinegar.

As per Canada’s National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health, vinegar contains an acid which crosses the cell membrane of bacteria. This causes a release of protons due to which cells die. Keep reading the different ways of using acid cedar vinegar and you will never like to use any other cleaning solution.

1) Removes mildew from your bathtub
It is not easy to remove mildew from the bathtub, but with the help of ACV, this is an easy task. You need an equal quantity of the vinegar and water. Mix it well and use the mixture to get rid of light stains. If the stains are dark, you do not have to dilute the ACV. You can spot scrub the stain. If the whole tub has stains and mildew, you need to pour at least two cups of the vinegar, just under hot water. Fill the tub so that the stains are covered. Let the tub soak for three hours at least. You can then drain the water. The stains can be easily removed. Your tub shall be shiny and nice. You can use the vinegar for cleaning the washbasin too.


2) Cleans your electronic devices
Electronic devices like cell phone, laptop and printer should always be free from dirt and dust. It is important to keep them free from dust. Vinegar is quite effective in getting get of dust and other impurities. Turn off the device before you start cleaning. You will then need to mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a bucket. You shouldn’t use a spray bottle because the liquid might slowly move into the circuit and cause irreparable damage. You need to dampen one washcloth and then remove any residual water. You can use this damp cloth to clean the device. Dip one small cotton ball in this solution, remove excess water and clean some tight places which includes keyboard.

You can also clean the mouse with this solution. However, before you clean the mouse, you should remove the ball which is just underneath, so that you do not damage it. You can then take this damp cloth, remove excess water and use it to clean the ball. You can also use a cotton swab to remove any kind of debris which lies in the ball chamber. Let the ball dry out completely, before you can have it back.

3) Cleans shower curtains
If there is mildew in the shower curtain, it can actually look awful. It is also quite difficult to clean this mildew by hand. Thus, most people prefer to throw away their shower curtain and get another one. However, if you have ACV at home, you can have your shower curtain clean easily. All you need to do is throw the curtain in the washing machine. Add one cup of ACV and rinse well. When it is done, your curtain will look like completely new.

4) Cleans glass shower doors and mirrors
If you don’t have an old school shower curtain, you can use apple cider vinegar to clean the glass on your shower screen and even your bathroom mirrors. You need to mix equal quantities of warm water and vinegar. You need to dampen a rag in this and wipe down the door. You will be able to remove all those stubborn stains and spots which were previously difficult to remove. As you clean, you will notice that tracks of your shower door aren’t that hot since it collects grime and dirt. To clean the tracks, you will need fill the tracks with at least two cups of ACV (undiluted). Let it remain for at least 5 hours. You can pour some hot water on the track. This shall help in removing all dirt and grime. In case of stubborn stains you might have to scrub it off using a toothbrush or a scrub brush.

 5) A powerful toilet cleaner
It is not easy to clean and disinfect toilets at the same time. ACV is very effective in doing both at the same time. You need to pour at least two cups of ACV in the toilet every night. Let it remain overnight. You will notice that the stains are soon disappearing. If anything is left, it can be easily scrubbed away. Do this for a week and you will be able to get rid of all tough stains and marks.

6) Polished bathroom fixtures
Use ACV for cleaning bathroom fixtures like towel racks, door knobs and chrome faucets. You just need to pour the vinegar on a soft cloth. Wipe the fixture with this cloth. You can wipe down gently. Your fixtures shall be glistening and clean in a short time. If you wish to clean mirrors, you will need an old newspaper instead of a cloth.

7) Polish your silver
If silver is tarnished, you can make it shine once again with ACV. You simply need to soak silver in a solution of ACV. Let the silver sit for a few hours. You can also use a pinch of baking soda. Baking soda has an abrasive texture which helps in getting rid of a tarnished look. Let the vinegar sit for a few hours and you can rinse using cold water. Let it dry completely. The silver shall spark again in a short time.

 8) Bring the sparkle back to copper, brass and bronze
You can use the vinegar to polish other items like copper, brass and bronze. You can prepare a paste using equal quantities of ACV and sea salt. You need to coat the products using the paste and then rub gently, till the tarnish is completely got rid of. You can rinse using cold water and dry the product.

9) Use as a natural deodoriser
Do you often feel frustrated with a bad odour at home? There are a few persistent and strong smells at home, which are really difficult to get rid off.  This can be smoke also. To get rid of this smell, you need to simmer ACV in one saucepan on stove. Simmer for an hour. In case you find the odour very powerful, you can leave a bowl of this ACV in your room.

10) Remove candle wax
Candles leave behind their wax which are often quite difficult and time consuming to scrape out. You will need a spatula to remove the wax which is sometimes very tough. You can mix equal quantities of acid cedar vinegar and water. Dip a cotton ball in this and apply the ball on the residue. You can rub the candle wax away.

11) Get rid of water rings
How often do you forget to use the coasters? The water rings can sometimes get really boring and difficult to remove. Your mom naturally gets nagging about the regular rings which are left behind on the tables. All that you need to do is use ACV and get rid of the stains on the tables. Your mom will no longer be annoyed with you.

 12) Remove kitchen grease
Kitchen grease tends to get nasty and difficult to get rid of, if you do not clean it on time. The grease gets really stubborn, especially on counters, broilers and stove. To remove this, you need to mix equal quantities of ACV and water. Dip a cloth in this solution and start wiping down the grease comfortably. Vinegar will help in neutralising the odour. Add some vinegar to your dishwashing soap and you will be able to make it even more powerful. This mixture can be used on a daily basis for cleaning kitchen countertop or stove.

ACV is really effective in keeping your chopping board free from bacteria. You need to simply wipe the kitchen board using the vinegar. It shall be clean and will be free from any bacteria.

14) Give your microwave a natural deep clean
Microwave can get dirty and stinky very fast. Steam cleaning is a method to ensure that your microwave is free from stains and stink. You need to one cup of water and ¼ cup of ACV. Mix. You need to cook this mixture on a high flame for at least five minutes. Let the mixture cool down and you can dip a cloth in this liquid. Use it to wipe the microwave and keep it clean.

15) Clean out your fridge and freezer
ACV is quite effective in keeping your refrigerator clean. This is used since decades to keep the refrigerator clean for many decades. You need to mix equal amounts of acid cedar vinegar and water. Dip a cotton cloth and remove excess water out. Use this cloth to remove dirt, mildew and other things which are on your refrigerator. Use this everyday to keep your refrigerator clean and fresh.

16) Keep your coffee machine cleancoffee-machine-cleaner
There are many people who do not clean their coffee makers for years. This is highly unhygienic and definitely not good for health. It is important to clean your coffee maker after at least 40 brew cycles. You will need one cup of water and two cups of ACV. You need to add one paper filter and then pour this solution in the water chamber, just as you pour water to prepare coffee. You can then turn it on. You can run one total brew cycle. You can remove the filter and then have a fresh one in its place. You can also remove the reusable filter. Run some fresh water through the machine and for two cycles more. You can again replace the filter and clean it again.
